INDIANAPOLIS — Irvington community members gathered Saturday to remember an Indianapolis Fire Department recruit who was killed in a four-car crash Friday evening.

David Short, 26, was killed in a four-car crash Friday near the Indianapolis Regional Airport. He recently became an IFD recruit—something those who knew Short said he always dreamed of.

Before he became a recruit, Short worked at Jockamo Upper Crust Pizza in Irvington.

"He became such a big part of the identity of Jockamo," Irvington General Manager Joe Swan said. "We will always be better, because of him being here. We will always celebrate him everyday."

When Short officially left Jockamo to become a firefighter, colleagues presented him with a pizza in the shape of a heart. He gave his heart and soul to everything he did.

"Just a fabulous man," family friend Laura Glynn said. "Everyone who knew him loved him. Just can't say enough about what a positive influence he was in the lives of a lot of people."

"David left us too soon but he left having achieved the one milestone he wanted more than anything else in the world and that was to be an IFD Firefighter," IFD said in a statement. "His energy and smile will be missed."

Funeral arrangements are still pending.
