FRANKLIN, Ind. -- A Franklin City Councilman submitted his resignation to the Johnson County Central Committee Chairman on Thursday following a controversial social media post.
The post shared by on Facebook by Franklin Councilman Joseph Ault made reference to an offensive comment reportedly made by President Trump in a meeting about immigration.
In his letter to Central Committee Chairman Beth Boyce, Ault said he didn't want to put the City or County through any more bad publicity.
Ault went on to say:
"I know the city is in very capable hands with the current leadership that's in place. Once again I want to apologize to the citizens of Franklin and to the Council for my lack of good judgment in this matter."
Franklin Mayor Steve Barnett said he was surprised and disappointed when he saw the post on Ault's Facebook page.
"I think at first I was just like I am now - disappointed in the comments and the thoughts," said Mayor Barnett.
The Facebook post said "We bring s***hole people from s***hole countries because Democrats need s***hole voters so they can turn America into a s***hole" and then asked - Do you agree?
Ault has also served as a reserve deputy with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office for more than 20 years.
In a statement to RTV6 on Monday, Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox said his agency will conduct an investigation into the posting. Sheriff Cox said he will make the final determination about Ault's status as a reserve deputy.
