INDIANAPOLIS — Much like pre-production on a Hollywood blockbuster, the pieces are falling into place in what will soon be Indy's newest cinema space.

Construction is in full-swing at the Kan-Kan Cinema. The building is situated in the Windsdor Park neighborhood, just northeast of the core of downtown. That location was the first key element in the planning process.

"By being located in a residential area, particularly one like Windsor Park that's getting a lot of attention near downtown, that allows us to have more opportunities to get truly engaged in the community, which is the goal of being a not-for-profit arts institution," Kan-Kan Cinema executive director Louise Henderson said.

The Kan-Kan will eventually include four screens, from a 150-seat theater to an intimate 30-seat room. The programming will focus on independent films and locally produced content.

"Indianapolis has had an awesome film-making community and film-loving community, but we've been missing a home to gather all parties together," Kan-Kan Cinema programming director Daniel Jacobson said. "It will kind of be an unofficial film school for Indianapolis, but also bring in local film makers, give them a home to screen their work."

Kan-Kan management hopes to have their premiere screenings sometime before the end of March. They are also looking to be a host site for some of Indy's film festivals.

"Indianapolis has had an awesome film-making community and film-loving community, but we've been missing a home to gather all parties together," Jacobson said.

The front of the house will also include a restaurant space. The French-inspired brasserie and cocktail bar will be open on its own. There will be multiple community spaces, as well.

"Let us be your host," Henderson said. "You come here, let us be a convening space. Let us put your work up on the big screen. Let us help you come together. We all love film, and we've all been doing this for years. So excited to bring that to a year-round venue."
