WHITELAND, Ind. – Kelsay Farms in Whiteland starts at the source of tasty milkshakes and grilled cheese by giving their cows the best treatment.
The female cows are fed 100 pounds of food each day and sleep on beds most wouldn’t expect.
“We've always kind of said we treat them like ladies because they're all ladies. The better you treat a cow, the actually the more they produce,” said sixth generation dairy farmer Amy Kelsay. “Our cows sleep on waterbed mattresses. It's a really thick rubber mat full of water - we put a really thick layer of sawdust on top to keep them dry.”
With the relaxing environment, all 500 cows are milked three times per day, with the average cow producing eight gallons every 24 hours.
