INDIANAPOLIS — The museum and library honoring one of Indianapolis’ most famous natives needs funding for its permanent home.

The Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library needs to raise $300,000 by the end of the month to secure its location at 543 Indiana Avenue.

"These funds will allow us to purchase the building and begin renovations needed to open to the public," a post on the organization's website says.

The museum was located on Senate Avenue for eight years, but the lease expired in February. While the museum and library’s location is in limbo it has been operating a gift shop at Circle Centre Mall.

Vonnegut, who died in 2007, was an author, satirist, and World War II veteran. Perhaps his most famous work, “Slaughterhouse-Five,” turns 50 this year.

The museum and library has committed providing 86,000 copies of “Slaughterhouse-Five” to Indiana schools in 2019. Comedian and late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is the honorary chair of the book giveaway.
