LAWRENCE — A Lawrence Police Department officer now has a friend for life after he rescued a pup while on duty back in May.
Officer Stuart Bishop freed the dog from a fence while responding to a report of an abandoned puppy, Lawrence Police Department PIO Gary Woodruff said.
"It was obvious there was an instant bond between the Husky mix pup and Officer Bishop," Woodruff said.
During the rescue, which was captured live on A&E's LivePD, Bishop can be heard saying he was sending photos of the pup to his wife "just in case no one claims him."
The pup was turned over to animal control and after unsuccessful attempts to locate the owner he was put up for adoption.
Bishop jumped at the chance and adopted the dog, now called Rizzo, named after Chicago Cubs First Baseman Anthony Rizzo. (One of Bishop's favorite players)
Bishop has served with the Lawrence Police Department for six years. He's a member of the Special Weapons & Tactics team and is a certified field training officer. Prior to joining LPD, he served as a VA Police Officer at the Roudebush VA Medical Center and is also a U.S. Air Force veteran.
