BLOG: Peaceful protests turn into violent riots in Indianapolis over weekend

INDIANAPOLIS — Police began making arrests in downtown Indianapolis Sunday evening for violations of an 8 p.m. curfew issued by Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett.

Peaceful protests turned into violent riots Friday and Saturday. Several buildings were damaged, fires were set in the streets, and multiple people were shot Saturday night.

On Sunday, Hogsett issued a curfew in Marion County from 8 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday in response to the continued violence.

Protests continued Sunday evening in downtown Indianapolis for the third day in a row.

The events Sunday evening come after religious leaders in Indiana held a peaceful protest and demonstration Sunday afternoon.

6 a.m.
The curfew that began at 8 p.m. in Indianapolis is lifted.

9:39 p.m.
The following message about traffic restrictions was released by IMPD.

"As a result of the curfew in effect in Marion County, inbound traffic into downtown is now closed. This closure extends from the White River on the west, I-65 on the north, I-65 on the east, to McCarty/I-70 on the south. Exceptions include individuals traveling directly to or from work, seeking medical care, or fleeing from dangerous circumstances; law enforcement and first responders; members of the news media; federal, state, or local public officials conducting necessary work; and individuals experiencing homelessness. These restrictions went into effect at 8pm and will remain until 6am tomorrow."

8:07 p.m.
IMPD Chief Randal Taylor is giving an update. You can watch it below:

8 p.m.
The curfew for Marion County is now in effect until 6 a.m. Monday.

IMPD said they will now start giving the announcement below to those still downtown.

"It is now 8:00 p.m., the mandatory curfew is in effect. You should return home immediately or you will be subject to arrest."

7:48 p.m.
We are expecting an update from IMPD Chief Randal Taylor soon.

7:45 p.m.
IMPD says they will give the announcement below to remind people of the curfew:

"It is now 7:45 p.m. We want to ensure that everyone has time to return before the 8:00 p.m. curfew begins. If you are still here after 8:00 p.m., you will be subject to arrest."

7:36 p.m.
At least one person was seen being taken into custody near the Indiana Statehouse.

It appears something has been deployed near the Indiana Statehouse.

People are gathering near the Circle Centre Mall.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers have told people the gathering has become an unlawful assembly and have asked them to disperse.
