WASHINGTON — The funeral for former U.S. Senator Richard Lugar will be on Wednesday May 15 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church on the Indianapolis north side.

Plans were announced Friday by the Lugar Center in Washington.

The six-term senator from Indianapolis died at the age of 87 on April 28 in Virginia.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. on the 15th at St. Luke's where Lugar was a lay leader and his family were founding members.

The church is not large enough to hold everyone who wishes to attend, but the service will be streamed live on the Internet.

For 24-hours prior to the funeral, the Senator will lie in state in the Statehouse Rotunda, beginning with a brief ceremony at noon on Tuesday May 14.

Governor Holcomb will commence the memorial period, after which the Rotunda will be open for those who wish to pay their respects.

The public will be welcome through sunset on the 14th and from 8 a.m. through 11 a.m. the following day.

The Lugar family will greet well-wishers in the South Atrium of the Capitol from 2 to 7 p.m. on the 14th.

Richard Lugar served in the U.S. Senate from 1977 to 2013, after two terms as Mayor of Indianapolis.
