ANDERSON, Ind. -- Cold storage is literally warm and welcome news in Anderson after Wednesday’s groundbreaking of a $30-million cold storage warehouse. The city and Interstate Warehousing, a division of Tippmann Group, celebrated the ceremonial groundbreaking for the 240,000 square foot facility at 73rd and Layton Road in Anderson. This initial phase, expected to open next year, will employ 60 people. Future expansion will be done in several phases on the 77-acre parcel of land. Once finished, it could be as large as one million square feet.

Anderson Mayor Thomas Broderick Jr. says ““We are proud that Interstate Warehousing has chosen Anderson in which to expand and build their new facility.”

What’s cold storage? Really it is as it sounds. Interstate Warehousing Inc. is a division of the Tippmann Group, headquartered in Fort Wayne.  The company owns and operates temperature-controlled warehouse space across the country, making it the country’s sixth-largest public refrigerated warehouse company.

Mayor Broderick says, “This new project will allow for continued growth of Anderson’s tax base while creating new good paying jobs for our community.” Besides the company’s $30-million investment, the City of Anderson offered a seven-year, 60% tax abatement as an incentive.

This is the latest good-news announcement for a community that has seen more than its share of job and population loss over recent years. In January, Purdue Polytechnic Institute opened its doors to students. The joint collaboration between Purdue, the city, and local companies paid off with an initial $17 million investment and almost 200 students right out of the gate. In June, NTK, a Japanese automotive supplier, broke ground on a $98-million production plant expected to employ almost 200 people by 2021.
