ANDERSON, Ind. -- The parents of an 18-month-old who died under "suspicious circumstances" after a car accident last week are seeking justice for their child.

Harlan Haines died on Sunday at Riley Hospital for Children.

Jenny Harris says her now-ex boyfriend was driving Harlan to Community Hospital in Anderson Friday morning when the vehicle hit a utility pole.

"I woke up and walked outside and as I walked outside the police were pulling up and said they're going to an accident down the street from our house," said Greenlee. "He wrecked the car about a block and a half from where we live."

Harlan's Godmother, Bethaney Greenlee said the man, who has not been identified because he hasn't been charged, blamed the child's injuries on the accident - but they don't believe him.

"He hit a telephone pole and tried to blame the baby's injuries on the car accident but the detective told her when she got to the police station that it didn't match up," said Greenlee. "The baby's injuries didn't match up with the car accident."

Investigators are waiting for autopsy results to determine whether or not the accident was the sole cause of Harlan's death but they say they consider the circumstances "suspicious."

Harlan's father, Jackie Haines, says he thinks there's more to the story.

"I should have been there, I wasn't," said Jackie. "I won't ever forgive myself that I wasn't there to protect him. He just doesn't deserve this. He doesn't deserve it at all."

No arrests have been made at this time and police have not named any suspects.

"I just wish I could go back and be able to wake up every morning to make those bottles and see him wake up and see his big blue eyes," said Jackie.
