Inmate serving 65 years for murder dies at Pendleton Correctional Facility

PENDLETON —An inmate who was serving a 65 year sentence for murder died in his cell in Madison County on Monday.

Pendleton Correctional Facility issued a release Monday afternoon saying James E. Townsend was discovered unresponsive in his cell and was pronounced dead just before 7 a.m.

The prison says Townsend was serving a 65 year sentence for murder and had a projected release date of December 29, 2042.

The events surrounding Townsend's death are under investigation by Pendleton Correctional Facility Investigations, Intelligence Office and Indiana State Police.

Townsend's cause of death will be determined by the Madison County Coroner.
