LAPEL, Ind. -- Parents in one Madison County town are concerned about a dangerous intersection where they drop of their kids each morning and they’re encouraging other parents to file complaints with INDOT to draw attention to the need for change at an intersection near the elementary and middle schools.

“I have to drop off to the elementary, middle school and high school. I have to usually start my route early to get across this intersection to get to the high school,” Stephanie Evelo said.

The intersection at State Road 13 and 300 South has no stop light, which parents like Evelo say causes delays and congestion for drivers when parents are dropping off and picking up students at Lape elementary and middle schools.

“If you’re trying to get east or west across here, we get a lot of traffic from Anderson to Noblesville, they can’t get across this intersection because all this traffic doesn’t stop,” Evelo said.

Another mom says she lives just two minutes away from Lapel Elementary School and the traffic on 300 South is so bad that she loops around and gets on I-69 to avoid all the congestion.

The superintendent for Frankton-Lapel Community Schools says he feels there is a need for some kind of traffic control at the intersection. He says a large number of students commute to school, from both inside and outside the district, and he says this is leading to congested traffic issues in the area.

INDOT tells RTV6 they do not plan on making any changes to the intersection.

However, they are planning to add a 3-way stop to the intersection just north of that intersection at State Road 13 and Old State Road 132.

INDOT says traffic engineers hoe the changes at SR 13 and SR 132 will be done by the spring and they believe changing that intersection will improve the conditions at 300S.

Once a 3-way stop is added, INDOT says they will study SR 13 and 300S again to see if additional signals are needed.

If you have any concerns about an intersection in your area you can report them to INDOT by calling 1-865-463-6848 or at indot4u.com
