ANDERSON, Ind. -- An animal rights group is offering a reward up to $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest of the person responsible for ripping three paws off of an Anderson family's dog and then leaving him to die.

The family said they put their 12-year-old chocolate Labrador named Charlie out into the backyard and found him a short time later lying in a pool of blood.

Family members say Charlie had been mutilated. Three of his paws and his tail were cut off.

Charlie had to be euthanized because of the extent of his injuries.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction on cruelty to animals charges of the person or persons responsible for Charlie's injuries.

Anderson Police say they are still investigating the crime and have not yet said how they believe Charlie was injured but family members say they believe someone cut a hole in their fence, took Charlie and mutilated him and then put him back in their yard.

"The agony that Charlie must have felt after three of his paws and his tail were mutilated is painful even to imagine," says PETA Vice President Colleen O'Brien. "If his injuries were intentionally inflicted, it's vital that whoever caused them be held accountable before anyone else gets hurt."

Anyone with information about the crime should contact Crime Stoppers at 765-649-8310.
