INDIANAPOLIS — An 11-year veteran of the Marion County Sheriff's Office has been fired and faces criminal charges.

Prosecutor Terry Curry announced Thursday that John Dorsey allegedly battered a man "while in the performance of his official duties."

A spokesperson for the sheriff said Dorsey was fired earlier this week from his job as a lieutenant in the Sex Offender Registry Unit.

He faces one felony count of Official Misconduct by a Public Servant and two misdemeanor counts of Battery Resulting in Bodily Injury.

According to the probable cause affidavit, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to the area of Lafayette Road and West 60th Street to assist with a traffic stop of a person with an active arrest warrant.

At the scene, the man told officers that his arrest was personal.

It is alleged that the man had been in a relationship with the mother of Lieutenant Dorsey's children.

A witness told police Dorsey appeared to have allegedly struck the man between the legs while searching him.

It is further alleged that Dorsey threatened and struck the man while taking him to the Marion County Jail.

Dorsey has a court appearance scheduled next month.
