INDIANAPOLIS -- Decatur Central High School athletes are scoring both on and off the field.

Director of Athletics, Justin Dixon, helps lead the Hawks Helping Hawks initiative.

It's a program that teaches the student athletes the importance of giving back to their community such as volunteering at local elementary schools and doing relay for life.

“We give freedom to our student athletes on what they want to do and how they want to do it,” said Dixon.  “There are a lot of ways our Hawks can impact and help Hawks around the district and that is what we challenge them to do.”

Their latest community service outing had the students picking up trash around Decatur Township.

Dixon says it's great to see his athletes be a part of something bigger than themselves.

"I never really got involved with anything community wise,” said freshman Peyton Horsley. “I never done anything like that but it really opened my eyes coming into high school how it's kind of helping me mature and stuff like that it helps me work as a team."
