INDIANAPOLIS – A recent carjacking on the Indianapolis south side is sending an important message to shoppers.

Early Sunday afternoon, outside the “Cardwell Do It Best” home center on Madison Avenue, an unsuspecting shopper was robbed of his wallet and his vehicle.

The hooded suspect hid around a corner then rushed the victim and took his wallet.

Indianapolis police are looking for the suspect who is seen in security camera video walking toward the red car.

IMPD Officer Genae Cook says people in parking lots must be aware of their surroundings.

“When you leave the store, be sure to have the key in your hand,” Cook said.  “Make sure you have the ability to just look around, take a second, stop when you come out of the store.  Look around and pay attention to what’s going on around you.

Police also say it’s best to avoid parking near walls, bushes of anything else a thief can hide behind.

As for Sunday’s carjacking and robbery, if you know anything, call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at: 317-262-TIPS.
