LAWRENCE, Ind. -- One man was arrested Friday morning after leading police on a chase in Lawrence, Indiana, police say.

Officers with the Lawrence Police Department responded to Churchill Ranch Apartments near 42nd Street and Franklin Road around 11:20 p.m. Thursday on a call of shots fired.

Police located a vehicle matching the suspect’s vehicle description and attempted to make a stop. According to Deputy Chief of Police Gary Woodruff, the suspect fled the scene leading police on a chase.

In the course of the pursuit, the officers saw the suspect toss a handgun from window of the vehicle.

Officers pursued the vehicle to the intersection of 42nd Street and Mitthoeffer Road, where the suspect got out of the vehicle with a "carbine-style rifle," Woodruff said.

The suspect confronted the officers with the rifle, and officers fired 5-6 shots at him. Woodruff said the suspect then dropped the rifle and ran from the officers.

An officer on the scene initially said the suspect fired at officers, but Woodruff said that did not happen. No officers were hurt.

The suspect in the chase was found in a house at the original intersection near 42nd Street and Franklin Road. The homeowners, a man and a woman, were taken in for questioning.

The suspect, later identified as Korei Crawford, 42, of Indianapolis, was taken into custody with one gunshot wound to the leg. The suspect is expected to be OK, and could face many charges, including serious violent felon in possession of a firearm and criminal reckless with a deadly weapon.
