INDIANAPOLIS -- The Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township has reached its lowest staff turnover rate since they’ve been tracking data, according to Superintendent Jeff Butts.

The district hired 90 teachers for the 2017-2018 school year, compared to 110 hires in 2016-2017 and 140 teachers hired in 2011-2012.

Of the 9 percent who resigned or retired, 26 percent left for another district, 22 percent retired, 16 percent moved out of state, and 12 percent became a stay at home parent.

MSD Wayne Township has made a concerted effort to recruit and retain teachers, including giving teachers the support they need to be successful.

“Teachers are expected to work really hard here, but they're very well supported,” said district spokesperson Mary Lang. “We have a lot of really great, passionate teachers here.”

Salaries in Wayne Township range from $41,934 to $83,269, documents show.

As Call 6 Investigates has reported, thousands of Indiana teachers are leaving the classroom mostly because of salary concerns and pressure surrounding standardized testing.

The state’s average retention rate for educators is 82 percent.
