BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- An abandoned kitten is doing great after a Monroe County deputy found her during an early morning patrol last week.

Deputy Bennett Dillon discovered the kitten at about 2 a.m. on Oct. 10 in Leonard Springs Nature Preserve, according to the sheriff's department. The kitten, who now goes by "Lennie," was in a bag of trash and was covered in trash and feces. She was barely breathing and had blood in her eyes and ears.

Dillon took the kitten and wrapped her in a blanket. He brought her to Arlington Heights Veterinary Hospital, where Dr. Dale Miller found she had parasites, extremely low body temperature, fleas and a broken leg. They gave the kitten antibiotics, fluids, a blood transfusion and a cast/splint.

Even with the care, it wasn't immediately clear if Lennie would survive. But she pulled through thanks to Dillon, Miller and the staff at AHVH, according to the sheriff's department. Now, "she is doing great," they wrote on Facebook.

Lennie is now being fostered by another deputy as she continues to recover.
