MONROE COUNTY, Ind. -- Some people plan on protesting the superintendent of a Monroe County school corporation Monday evening, after an error cost taxpayers hundreds of dollars.

Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corporation Superintendent Dr. Mike Wilcox made an error while preparing a debt worksheet submitted to the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance, Call 6 Investigates reported earlier this month.

The error resulted in a tax increase for more than 10,000 taxpayers in nearby townships. Some people's property taxes increased by as much as $120.

Some people affected by the tax increase are planning on picketing outside Monday night's school board meeting, as the district evaluates Wilcox.

The district initially told Call 6 Investigates it would not send out letters to homeowners explaining the error.

However, following our Call 6 Investigation, Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corporation mailed letters on May 15 apologizing for the mistake.

"The Richland-Bean Blossom Community School District had repeatedly told the community that we will strive to be tax neutral for our debt service," read the letter. "So I am sure you were surprised to see the tax rate for debt service increase. We were surprised as well."

Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corporation (RBBCSC) superintendent Dr. Mike Wilcox made the error while preparing the debt worksheet submitted to the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance.

Dr. Wilcox erroneously reported the 2013 Lease Rental bond payment for the first six months of 2019 as $1,224,208 and the Building Lease payment as $1,375,500.
