MOORESVILLE, Ind. -- A community is coming together to help an Indiana National Guardsman who lost his wife in an accident with a suspected drunken driver on Father’s Day.
Zane and Brittany Fields had spent the evening of July 17 watching racing at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville.
They were headed home on US 40 near Cascade High School when Zane said his wife unbuckled her seat belt and leaned over to give him a Father’s Day kiss. Moments later, another vehicle rear-ended them, causing Zane’s car to flip five times. Brittany was ejected out the front windshield.
“In reality, it can happen to anyone at any given time,” said Zane. “I used to take so many things for granted, but I don’t anymore. Tomorrow is never guaranteed.”
Brittany suffered severe head trauma and spent 45 days at IU Methodist Hospital before her family made the difficult decision to disconnect her from life support.
Now, Zane is left to raise their 10-month-old son, Aiden, alone. He said his fellow soldiers, friends, and family have been a huge support over the past few weeks. They’ve been raising money to help Zane and his son get through the financial burden they have now, and what’s still to come.
Zane said he his goal is to raise Aiden so he knows how much his mother loved him.
“Do the best I can to raise him up right. To make sure he knows that his mom loved him. That she cared about him. Try to find a new normal, so to speak,” said Zane.
A 20-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with drunk driving causing serious bodily injury.
