INDIANAPOLIS — A state-of-the-art childcare center in scheduled to open next Monday on the Indianapolis east side.

A grand opening celebration for the Minnie Hartmann Neighborhood Childcare facility on East Vermont Street at Sherman Drive took place Tuesday. It's designed to serve 120 children and will be part of the Shepherd Community Center.

The same facility has an 83,000 square-foot senior housing section that was finished last year.

The 11,000-square foot childcare section, transforms eight vacant school classrooms into 10 state-of-the-art early-learning areas and office space for Shepherd Community Center.

Once open, Shepherd Community Center will begin to coordinate activities between participating children and the senior adults.

Primary capital funding for the $1.8 million childcare facility has come through the City of Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development and United Way of Central Indiana, with support from Lilly Endowment and Cummins, along with a host of supporting local grants and community partners.
