INDIANAPOLIS — A gas station being built in the Haughville neighborhood on the Indianapolis west side has some residents worried, but there doesn't appear to be anything they can do about it.

The station will be at West 10th and King Streets on what had been an empty lot.

Francetta Peterson has lived in the area for many years and is concerned the gas station will bring additional crime.

"Gas stations tend to bring a lot of money. When you have a gas station it attracts people who want to rob a gas station. And they say a liquor store with that. That is not good," said Peterson.

She wonders why the neighborhood wasn't told about the new business ahead of time.

Since the developer filed for permits in 2015 and started construction before those permits expired in 2018, the station is legal, according to City-County Council President Vop Osili.

Zoning laws were created in 2016 that might have kept the gas station out of the neighborhood, but before that, public hearings were not required.

RTV6 hopes to speak to the person working on the project next week and get their reaction to the crime concerns residents are expressing.
