SOUTHPORT, Ind. -- Just hours before he was shot and killed, Southport police Lieutenant Aaron Allan walked his 5-year-old son, Aaron Jr., to the bus for his first day of kindergarten.
Lt. Allan will never get to hear how his son’s first day went.
A powerful image being shared on social media shows some of the last moments Lt. Allan spent with his son Thursday morning. The photo shows Lt. Allan, in full uniform and his son with a Batman backpack. The two were holding hands as they walked across the street so Aaron Jr. can catch the bus for his first day of kindergarten at Wayne Township Schools.
Neighbors who live in the tight-knit cul-de-sac with the Allans say that photo encapsulates the kind of man that Lt. Allan was.

"You know, that was little Aaron’s first day of school and that was a happy moment for him,” said neighbor Lisa Mills. “That’s going to be a lasting memory for him.”
Police say Lt. Allan was walking up to a car that had crashed and landed on its hood Thursday afternoon when someone inside fired at him. He was hit multiple times.

A responding Homecroft police officer along with an off-duty Johnson County deputy returned fire, striking one of the two men inside that vehicle. Both men were taken to the hospital, one to be treated for a gunshot wound and the other for injuries sustained from the crash.
The suspected shooter was the driver of the car, Jason Brown. He's been charged with conspiracy to commit murder. The passenger was interviewed by detectives and released without being charged in connection with Lt. Allan's death.
