NEW CASTLE — The New Castle Police Department is warning the public about a new scam circulating via text message.

According to police, people are receiving text messages that state "New Castle Police Chief Matt Schofield is conducting an investigation into cell phone scanning." The message then prompts people to call a phone number where they are advised that they must pay money as part of the investigation.

"New Castle Police Department wants to ensure everyone that this is a scam," the department posted on social media. "New Castle Police Department will never request money via text message or phone call in any form or fashion. If anyone has fallen victim to this scam please contact New Castle Police Department to file a report."

Police remind citizens to never share personal information via telephone and to remember that government organizations will never contact you over the phone to request payments, fees or donations.

If you have been contacted by someone you feel is trying to scam you, do not comply with the requests and contact your local law enforcement agency.
