Program pairs nurses with first-time moms to improve lives

Story highlights:

  • Indiana's infant mortality rate is 45th in the U.S. That is why a Marion County program is working hard to improve the lives of mothers and their babies.
  • Nurses with Goodwill Industries' Nurse-Family Partnership of Indiana are paired with women pregnant with their first child -- and work with them all the way through the child's second birthday.
  • Last year, 60 percent of moms in the program reported quitting smoking before giving birth and 80 percent of babies were born at a healthy weight.
  • The partnership serves 600 families in Marion County and will add another 200 by this fall. Goodwill plans to expand the program to Delaware, Grant, Madison and Lake counties.
