WEST LAFAYETTE — It's been almost a century since this crop was farmed on a large scale in Indiana, but the legalization of hemp in the Hoosier state has caused researchers to realize just how little we know about the plant.
That's why Purdue is working to change that, and scientists there are doing it with the first United States Department of Agriculture grant to study organic hemp production.
Nearly $1 million is going toward researching help crop rotation, soil conservation, timing, planting, and other factors that go into growing a successful crop.
There is no legal pesticide for hemp, either — so this is all about finding organic options to produce the healthiest crops.
