RANDOLPH COUNTY, Ind. -- A registered sex offender has been arrested in Randolph County after police say he tried to lure a 13-year-old girl into his vehicle on Sunday.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed on Monday, the girl told detectives that she was riding her bike near the park in Ridgeville with her dog when a man pulled up in a white vehicle. The man told the girl he had the other sibling to her dog and asked if she wanted to come see it.
When the girl declined, the man tried to get her to come to his vehicle anyway, according to court documents, but she ran home and told her mother.
The deputy said the description he got of the girl matched that of Daniel Dewitt, someone known to authorities and who is on the sex offender registry.
The description the girl gave the deputy matched that of a man known to them that was also on the sex offender registry.
According to court documents, when the deputy questioned Dewitt about the incident he admitted he was the person who was trying to show the girl his dog.
Dewitt told the deputy that he had a dog that he believes was from the same litter as the little girls and he was just trying to convince her to come across the street to see him. He stated repeatedly that he did not want the child to get into his car.
Dewitt was arrested and charged with attempted kidnapping.
The case remains under investigation by the Randolph County Sheriff's Office.
