CARTHAGE, Ind. -- Leaders in Carthage say they will replace a headstone at the town cemetery after it was damaged by an employee.
Faith Green says over the last two years she's had solar lights, flower urns and the headstone damaged on her mother's grave.
"This is supposed to be where I come to heal from losing my mother," Green said. "It fills me with anger because no one cares. They tell me there is accountability - and responsibility - I don't see any."
A town spokesperson said the damage was done by a town employee who mows the grass at the cemetery. They've glued the headstone back together at least once, but Green said things keep getting broken.
"It makes me feel like they don't care," Green said. "I understand this is just dirt and a stone to them, but it's all I have left of my mom. It's not fair that I can't come here and heal from losing her without being filled with rage."
That town spokesperson tells RTV6 that the issue boils down to lack of time, inattentiveness and one of the workers who is gaining in age. They say the other worker who helps maintain the grounds is a high school student and is inexperienced.
Town officials say they take full responsibility for the damage and they have advised the worker to be more diligent around markers that appear to be fragile. They also say they plan to replace the headstone for Green.
