INDIANAPOLIS — Cathedral High School and a recently-fired teacher have reached a settlement in the teacher's separation from the school for being in a same-sex marriage, according to Delaney & Delaney LLC.

The teacher, who wishes to not be identified, was fired last month from Cathedral, for not living up to his contract with the school. The Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis became aware of the contract dispute two year ago, when it was disclosed that a teacher was in a same-sex marriage.

A little over two weeks after being let go, Cathedral and the teacher have found "mutual satisfaction" that will "benefit of both parties."

According to a statement by Delaney & Delaney, the school is working with the teacher to help with future employment options for the teacher.

Read, in part, the statement in which the teacher expresses gratitude for the Catholic school:

"The teacher thanks Cathedral for the opportunities and experiences that he has had teaching at Cathedral and does not wish Cathedral any harm. The teacher also thanks his friends, former colleagues, and students for their support during this difficult time. Cathedral thanks the teacher for the years of service, contributions, and achievements. For its part, Cathedral intends to remain Catholic, while respectfully facilitating discernment among the Archdiocese, the Catholic community and the Cathedral Family on this issue."

At this time, a monetary settlement is not said to have been a factor in the agreement between the two parties.

The settlement is strictly between the employer, Cathedral, and the teacher. Greg Otolski, spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, told RTV6:

"This settlement was just between Cathedral and the teacher. Cathedral, of course, is the employer — not the Archdiocese — of this teacher, so it's their settlement."
