LAWRENCE — A man in custody managed to take off in a police car while handcuffed.

It happened Monday afternoon near East 42nd. Street and North Post Road in Lawrence.

The Lawrence Police Department says officers were in the process of arresting a wanted suspect.

The man had been buckled into the back seat of the police car and was handcuffed behind his back.

Somehow, he managed to unbuckle himself, got into the front seat of the car and drove off, while still handcuffed.

The suspect drove about two blocks and jumped out of the police car.

He was quickly taken back into custody and faces preliminary charges of escape and vehicle theft.
