State closing Camp Summit boot camp, cites decline

INDIANAPOLIS - State corrections officials say they plan to close a boot camp for juvenile offenders in northwestern Indiana because of a decreasing need for it.

The Indiana Department of Corrections announced Friday that 72 youths housed at the Camp Summit Boot Camp in LaPorte will be moved to community-based programs or other state facilities. The boot camp is scheduled to close Oct. 1.

Corrections Commissioner Bruce Lemmon credited improved state services for the decline of juvenile offenders.

The boot camp was created in 1995 and is the state's only para-military style camp for juveniles
