NOBLESVILLE — A group of Dads gathered to support one another on Sunday at a time when new fathers need it the most.
Down Syndrome Indiana is an organization for parents who have children with Down Syndrome to reach out for resources and support. Within the organization, there's a group focused on helping fathers. On Sunday, the group gathered for their Dad's Hay Ride Down Syndrome of Indiana Event.
When Stephen Simpson's now 18-year-old son was born, he remembers not knowing much about Down Syndrome and searching for answers. After feeling like he wanted to do more after participating in the Indiana Buddy Walk, Simpson helped form the DADS group.
"We were the guys that were in charge of moving tables and picking up trash," Simpson said. "We said we wanted to do a little bit more than that we want to be an organization that helps her fathers handle being dads of children with special needs."
For people like Joshua Kammerer, the group was has been a support system and developed into friendships.
"It doesn't matter where you live there is someone nearby that you can call if you want to just go out for a round of golf," Kammerer said. "You can send out an email and like minded dads or your friends will get together and have the opportunity to play and hang out."
