UNION CITY — A man who exchanged gunshots with police Monday in Union City was not killed by police gunfire.

That's the conclusion of an autopsy performed on 38-year-old Michael Evans of Union City.

According to Indiana State Police, the autopsy shows Evans died from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The incident began early Monday morning when police responded to a suspicious person call in Union City, which is in Randolph County on the Indiana-Ohio state line.

When police found Evans, he began shooting at officers, said Sheriff Art Moystner.

Police returned fire and a SWAT team was called to evacuate nearby homes, the sheriff said.

According to a report from the Indiana State Police, the suspect was hiding in the bushes at the corner of a home when he began shooting.

As officers moved in, they found the suspect dead, the sheriff's office said.
