NEW WAVERLY — When a car pulled into the New Waverly Fire Department Station on Thursday afternoon laying on the horn, three firefighters thought there may have been a bad accident nearby. None of them thought they were about to deliver their first baby.
The parents, Hannah and Joshua Owens were on their way to the hospital when they realized the baby wasn't going to wait. Firefighter and EMTs Jeromy Hileman, Dave Shedron and Curtis Babbs were building cabinets upstairs and came down to help.
Less than 10 minutes later, Timothy Owens was born.
The firefighters have 67 years of combined service as firefighters and Timothy was the first baby each of them had delivered.
On Friday, all the firefighters who helped delivered Timothy went to the hospital to visit and make him an honorary firefighter. Hannah and Joshua say they were amazed and surprised.
They are all certificated Emergency Medical Technicians and respond to medical calls, but the fire departments they work for rely on another ambulance service to transport patients to the hospital. They said this made the moment even more rare.
All of the firefighters said they were in shock afterwards because it was something very unexpected. For Babbs, he wasn't working on Thursday. He says he just stopped by the fire station to say hi.
Timothy was also the first baby born inside the fire station.
