5 people, including cop, injured in Lafayette apartment fire

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Five people were injured, including three children and a police officer, were in Sunday evening in an apartment fire in Lafayette.

Lafayette Police Department officers and emergency responders were called Sunday evening to the Tyckenham Apartments on the south side on the report of an apartment fire.

Lafayette police Sgt. Matt Gurd said one police officer was transported to a local hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, a child was flown to Indianapolis due to burns and smoke inhalation, and two children and a man were transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.

Gurd said preliminarily investigations determined the cause of the fire was a candle that fell over, but crews are still investigating.
