WESTFIELD — Students at Oak Trace Elementary in Westfield started a community project this year.

The fourth-graders decided to paint a mural with the theme of kindness.

Friday, those fourth-graders painted the north wall of the restroom building at Asa Bales Park in Westfield, which is a visible location in the park.

"The teachers told all the 4th graders that they could choose a word to put on the mural. And I chose the word 'forgiving,' and I get to paint it on the mural," Savy McGirr, a fourth-grader at Oak Trace, said.

When RTV6 asked McGirr why she chose the word 'forgiving,' she said because she and her mom talked about it, and she feels like it's important to forgive.

Students also designed the playground at the Asa Bales Park, as well.
