INDIANAPOLIS -- Who was the man who police say killed a young mother and her 4-year-old son?

Lucius O. Hamilton III, of Carmel, was the uncle of Katie Hamilton Giehll, who was found shot to death along with her son in their Zionsville home Wednesday morning.

Hamilton was involved as a volunteer for strategic planning for Wabash and he was an active donor, according the college's website.

He was a member of the Trader's Point Hunt Club in Zionsville which is about a quarter-mile away from the homicide scene.

Prior to Wednesday, Hamilton had no criminal history.

Police tracked him down to the Hilton in the 100 block of West Market Street Wednesday afternoon around 3 p.m.

State police knocked on a door and Hamilton said "yes?" Two shots were then fired. However, there is no indication that shots were fired at law enforcement.

At that point, law enforcement only moved in when they determined with electronic equipment that Hamilton was not moving.

He was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head. There was also alcohol and prescription drugs in the room.

Hamilton's vehicle has been found and processed as part of the crime scene, according to police. Police do not have any information as to why he went to the hotel.
