Could Ind. Carrier workers afford Mexico move?

MONTERREY, Mexico -- Many people continue to ask if it is possible for Carrier employees to transfer from the Indianapolis location to Monterrey. 

One middle-class family living in Monterrey told Call 6 Investigates Rafael Sanchez that it would not be a good idea. 

The couple both work and have a 1-year-old child. The family spends more than $1,000 a month on education and rent. A Carrier worker will make $480 a month if they work 40 hours a week and make an estimated $3 an hour. 

Most middle-class families in Mexico pay out-of-pocket for education and medical care. The government offers assistance for public schools and hospitals. 

When Rafael asked the couple if he could afford cable, a good school, and a nice home with the salary Carrier is offering its workers in Monterrey, they said no. 

A person would need to make $3,815 in Indianapolis to maintain the same standard of life you can have with $1,820 in Monterrey, assuming you rent in both places, according to Numbeo.
