LAFAYETTE — What police are calling an accidental shooting has left one man seriously wounded and another adult injured.

Lafayette police said a two-year-old found a handgun in an apartment on Friday and fired one shot.

A 20-year-old man who was in the apartment at the time was struck in the head and suffered life-threatening injuries.

Justin Davis was taken to a Lafayette hospital then transferred to Indianapolis.

Police said the same bullet that struck Davis in the head wounded a woman who was also in the apartment, but she is expected to survive.

A public information officer for the Lafayette Police Department said the tragic incident remains under investigation. Police were not sure if Davis and the toddler are related.

The gun was resting on a table when the child picked it up, police said.
