ELWOOD — Casey Smitherman has stepped down as superintendent of Elwood Community Schools.

She submitted her resignation to the school board Friday and it was accepted by the board at a special meeting, according to board member Brent Kane.

Smitherman turned herself in to police in January for allegedly claiming a student as her son during a trip to the doctor.

She faced insurance fraud charges.

She went back to work as superintendent after an agreement was reached with the Madison County Prosecutor in which charges would be dropped if she had a clean record for one-year.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Joe Brown will lead the school system for the time being.
