Hours after he was called a "con man" by former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, current GOP front-runner Donald Trump spoke at a rally in Maine.

"I heard Mitt Romney made a fairly long speech," Trump said before his supporters on Thursday afternoon. "He was very nasty. I thought he was a better person than that."

In his speech earlier Thursday, Romney attacked Trump's acumen regarding political policies and his history in private business. "Dishonesty is Donald Trump's hallmark," Romney said during a 20-minute address that mostly focused on Trump's campaign.

During his rebuttal, Trump repeatedly slammed Romney's unsuccessful 2012 presidential campaign, in which he lost to President Obama.

"(Mitt) let us down. He should have won," Trump said of the 2012 race. "He failed horribly."

"I backed Mitt Romney (in 2012)," Trump added. "He was begging for my endorsement. I could have said, 'Mitt, drop to your knees,' and he would have dropped to his knees."

In response to Romney's claim that there was "a bombshell" in Trump's unreleased past tax returns, Trump said, "There's nothing."
