Police are investigating after a man opened fire in a Phoenix Motel 6, killing two employees, before car-jacking a family nearby and taking off from the scene.

The suspect reportedly entered the motel near I-17 and Northern Avenue in Phoenix late Sunday night, said something to employees in the lobby and fired multiple shots, hitting three people.

Two of the victims were killed and another is in extremely critical condition. A man and woman were grazed by bullets while they were fleeing the scene, but were able to drive to a nearby gas station for help.

At an apartment complex about a block away from the motel, the suspect targeted a man, woman and their child, eventually stealing their vehicle at gunpoint. The suspect reportedly let the woman and child go, but took the man in the vehicle and got onto the highway.

Police say the vehicle was somehow disabled during the drive, so the suspect ran from the car, across the freeway and then car-jacked another vehicle. Police say the suspect got in several crashes along the way with other drivers.

The suspect ended up in a dead-end field in South Phoenix where he shot himself. He is expected to survive, police say.

The suspect is only described at this time as a 28-year-old African American man.

Police are still trying to figure out a motive for the shooting.
