SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- First Mike Pence in 2016, another Indiana politician could be eyeing a seat in Washington, DC.
According to a recent report in Politico , South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg met with former President Barack Obama at the end of last year, discussing a possible White House run in 2020.
Buttigieg has been the mayor of South Bend since 2012. He ran for chair of Democratic National Committee in 2017, but dropped out in February.
Buttigieg was highlighted in a New York Times opinion piece in 2016 called "The First Gay President?" In it, writer Frank Bruni says Buttigieg checks off the boxes for "a perfect Democratic candidate," such as education (he was a Rhodes Scholar), public service (he was deployed in Afghanistan as a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve), and religion (he attends Sunday services at his Episcopal church).
"Mayor Pete" as he's sometimes called announced his engagement to his boyfriend in December 2017.
