INDIANAPOLIS -- Beginning next year, all employees of the Indiana state government will receive paid time off to take care of a child.

Gov. Eric Holcomb signed an executive order Monday that gives state employees up to four weeks of parent leave to spend time with newborn or a newly adopted child.

Before this new policy, the state had no paid leave for new parents, leaving new mothers or fathers to take unpaid time off, or use their personal days.

The executive order goes into effect Jan. 1, 2018.

Correction: This story previously stated only employees of the executive branch would receive paid leave. That was incorrect and we regret the error.
