INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis City-County Council unanimously approved Monday evening a resolution to establish a steering committee to promote racial and social equity in the city and in Marion County.

The resolution, sponsored by Council President Vop Osili, states that minority populations in Indianapolis are more likely to be the victims of violent crime than white residents and are over-represented in the city’s population of homeless and incarcerated persons.

It also states the poverty rate for black households in Marion County is more than double the rate for white households.

Most special resolutions such as this are adopted by a voice vote, but Osili wanted to record the vote, so everybody would know how united the council is on this issue.
