INDIANAPOLIS — Local business owner John Schmitz has thrown his hat into the ring to be mayor of Indianapolis.

Schmitz announced his candidacy at an event at Maywood Tavern Sunday.

“It is time to have a mayor who is truly for the people of Indianapolis and who is not tied to party politics as usual,” Schmitz said in a press release. “I have a heart for this city and that means also supporting the candidates that I believe in based on their ethics, platform of initiatives, and ability to do the job, not based on their party affiliation.”

Schmitz is running for mayor as an independent candidate.

He is running against Democrat Joe Hogsett and Republicans Jim Merritt and Christopher Moore.

“As an independent candidate, I will be able to run my campaign based on what I believe is right and what is truly ‘doing something’ to make Indianapolis a better city,” Schmitz said.

Schmitz’s campaign claims to focus on four key movements – homelessness, addiction, crime and roads.

Election day will be Nov. 5.
