INDIANAPOLIS – A northern Indiana natural gas and electric company will have to pay a $1.1 million fine for failing to locate or mark its pipelines in two days as required by its pipeline safety procedures.
The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission issued an order Wednesday, approving $1,110,000 in civil penalties for Northern Indiana Public Service Company, or NIPSCO. The fine is the largest in state history, the IURC said.
The penalties stem from a 2017 settlement between NIPSCO and the IURC’s Pipeline Safety Division.
All funds collected from approved civil penalties will go directly to the state’s General Fund. None of the money for the fine can be recovered from NIPSCO’s customers.
