FORT WAYNE — The American Red Cross has issued emergency blood and platelet call outs as they face continued challenges in finding new blood donors following a "difficult" holiday weekend.

Last week, around 450 fewer blood drives were organized due to July 4, which led to about 17,000 fewer blood donations than the American Red Cross receives in a typical week. Now, the Red Cross has less than a three-day supply of most blood types — and less than a two-day amount for type 'O' blood. A five-day supply is a typical protocol for the Red Cross.

Over the next few weeks, the Red Cross has added about 8,000 additional blood drives to accommodate more donors.

Donors of all types, especially type 'O,' are urged to make an appointment using the Blood Donor App, or going to RedCrossBlood.org. Donors can also call 1-800-733-2767 to schedule an appointment.
