RISING SUN — The little southeastern Indiana town of Rising Sun is mourning the loss of its police chief.

49-year-old David Hewitt died in a single-vehicle accident Wednesday morning on State Road-56 in Switzerland County.

Rising Sun is in adjoining Ohio County.

According the the Switzerland County Sheriff's Office, icy road conditions may have played a role in the accident.

Hewitt had been police chief of Rising Sun, a town of 2,300, since 2004 and joined the department six-years earlier.

Rising Sun Mayor Brent Bascom said Hewitt worked in law-enforcement for 27-years.

He had been with the Dearborn County Sheriff's Department and Lawrenceburg Police Department before joining the Rising Sun department.

"At this time, I am ordering that all flags in the City of Rising Sun be lowered to half-staff and to remain at half-staff for a period of 27-days, one-day for each year of service Chief Hewitt gave to the citizens in our area," said Mayor Bascom.
